Tmrw is the day that the GOC landmark Renewable Fuels Standard officially comes into force.
Pulling a quote from the CRFA ( Canadian Renewable Fuels Association ) website “Five per cent of the gasoline that Canadians pump into their vehicles will come from renewable green sources harvested and produced across Canada” .
http://www.greenfuels.org/uploads/media_centre/2010%20news%20releases/121410_ethanol_rfs_starts_december_15.pdf
Now as the former Senior Technical Advisor on Biofuels, for Environment Canada’s STID ( Science and Technology Inegration Division ), I am not only intimately familiar with this new law but also helped write a great deal of the media lines and Q&A documents tha are currently out there. Some key things to remember about this legislation that will be absent from tmrw’s headlines are the following:
A) this is company wide mandate and does not mean that for every 100L pumped that 5 L will be renewable fuel, meaning that up to a certain limit you can get a % of EtOH at the pump that does not equal 5% of the total gas that you are pumping.
B) the current capacity of the Canadian Biofuels industry is not currently large enough to supply this mandate and we will as result be importing from either US or Brazilian supply
C) this does not apply to the Yukon, Nunavut, NWT or Newfoundland ( Qc north of 60 is also exempt )
D) this is way behind the US legislation that already launched an RFS2 earlier this year.
E) the report documenting the environmental impacts of biofuel production in Canada ( a complete exhaustive life-cycle analysis ) will not be released until late 2013, how this will help influence a law that is coming into place tmrw I am not quite sure…
Don’t me wrong I am not saying this isn’t a good first step towards transition towards alternative forms of energy, I am just saying dig a bit deeper than what you will see in tmrw’s headlines.
Anyone interested in knowing more please feel free to contact me via my twitter…
Thanks,
